Characteristics of BIM
First, BIM ensures the completeness of model information. Beyond just representing the 3D geometry and topological relationships of engineering objects, BIM encompasses comprehensive engineering data. This includes object names, structural types, building materials, design specifications, construction processes, progress tracking, costs, quality metrics, and resource information such as manpower, machinery, and materials. It also covers maintenance details like safety performance and material durability, as well as logical relationships between engineering objects.
Second, BIM emphasizes the interconnectedness of model information. Each object within the information model is uniquely identifiable and linked to others. The system can analyze this data statistically and generate corresponding visuals and documentation. When any object in the model is modified, all related elements are automatically updated to preserve the model’s integrity and coherence.
Third, BIM guarantees the consistency of model information throughout all stages of the building lifecycle. Information is entered once and reused, eliminating redundant input. The model evolves dynamically, allowing objects to be modified or expanded easily at different phases without the need for complete reconstruction, thereby minimizing errors caused by inconsistent data.
