Is There a Talent Shortage in the BIM Industry Today?

Informatization is essential across all industries, requiring highly versatile talents. This need is especially pronounced with the emergence of BIM technology, where the demand for such skilled professionals is even more acute in the construction sector.

Mr. He Guanpei highlighted this issue on his blog, categorizing BIM capabilities into six levels, ranked from basic to advanced:

  1. BIM software operation skills
  2. BIM model creation abilities
  3. Application of BIM models
  4. Establishing BIM application environments
  5. BIM project management skills
  6. BIM business integration capabilities

However, simply standardizing these BIM competencies might risk oversimplifying them as merely engineering or management skills, which doesn’t fully capture their essence. When analyzing BIM talent through the lens of common information technology skills, the emphasis should remain on information analysis and utilization. Therefore, organizing abilities hierarchically offers a more accurate framework.

Given the rapid advancement of information technology within the construction industry, the knowledge gap widens quickly, and the lifespan of BIM professionals tends to be short. Continuous learning and knowledge updating are crucial. Due to fierce competition, corporate loyalty among these professionals is often low. Without a supportive development environment or sustained investment, companies may struggle to retain top talent over time. Moreover, only individuals with strong learning capabilities and comprehensive application skills can thrive in this fast-evolving field, making it costly and challenging for companies to train and update their workforce internally.

Additionally, the overall education level and background of practitioners in the construction industry present limitations. The technical knowledge and quantity of specialized personnel are generally insufficient. From a cost-effectiveness perspective, focusing on targeted improvements rather than broad-based training yields better results.
