Many designers and leaders often misunderstand the role of a BIM manager. Is the BIM manager simply a drawing reviewer, a draftsman, a modeler, an IT engineer, or a rendering specialist? These roles are frequently confused with the responsibilities of a BIM manager. It is generally not advisable for individuals in other positions to take on BIM manager duties simultaneously. Designers, structural engineers, and mechanical and electrical engineers, for example, should avoid serving as BIM managers part-time, as this can limit their focus—especially during the critical phase of BIM implementation, which demands considerable time and effort.
Within a design team, the primary responsibilities of a BIM manager include:
- Providing application support and managing BIM software;
- Creating and maintaining BIM standards;
- Participating in BIM-related management tasks;
- Collaborating with IT departments and suppliers to maintain the BIM environment;
- Conducting training sessions on BIM technology and collaborative workflows;
- Supporting and participating in projects that utilize BIM;
- Assisting with BIM-related content for marketing initiatives;
- Engaging in various BIM organizations and industry activities.
