BIM (Building Information Modeling) is the direct application of information technology within the construction industry, supporting the entire lifecycle of construction projects—from design and construction to operation and maintenance. It serves as a platform for seamless communication and collaboration among all project stakeholders, significantly reducing errors, enhancing project quality, lowering costs, and shortening construction timelines. Due to these substantial benefits, the industry’s attention towards BIM has grown considerably.
Using BIM technology for clash detection across various professional designs not only eliminates hard and soft clashes but also improves engineering accuracy. This process greatly reduces the chances of errors, losses, and rework during construction. Additionally, BIM helps optimize space utilization and simplifies future use and maintenance.
With BIM, collaborative design can be achieved during the project’s design phase, integrated construction management throughout the building phase, and intelligent maintenance and facility management during operation. Most importantly, BIM breaks down traditional barriers between owners, construction teams, and operators—fully unlocking its value across the entire construction lifecycle.
Analyzing real-world engineering cases highlights the critical role BIM plays at every stage of a building’s lifecycle, firmly establishing its importance for construction projects.
While BIM technology has been widely adopted in developed regions such as Europe and North America, its use in China remains limited and largely exploratory. Currently, there is no unified BIM application standard in China. However, as BIM is increasingly implemented in more engineering projects, industry professionals will recognize its value and help promote and popularize the technology. This progress will benefit more projects and enable buildings to achieve visualization, parametrization, intelligence, and maximum efficiency throughout their lifecycles. Ultimately, BIM will become a powerful driver for the sustainable development of the construction industry.
