BIM technology has been rapidly developing in China. However, despite this apparent growth, the actual application of BIM within the domestic design and construction industries remains limited in both scope and depth. This reflects the current overall status of BIM technology adoption across the country. Naturally, as with any emerging technology, challenges arise during its development and widespread implementation. It requires stakeholders to take a measured approach—reflecting thoughtfully and responding proactively—and BIM technology is no exception.
Here are some key characteristics of BIM technology adoption in China today:
1. Adoption in Large Enterprises Is Limited to Specific Projects
While many large companies have started to explore or implement BIM technology, the penetration among employees remains low. Typically, BIM is applied only within certain projects rather than being widely embraced throughout the entire organization. Usually, technical staff may have experience with BIM, but senior management and other employees often remain unfamiliar with it. This lack of comprehensive exposure hinders broader adoption across enterprises.
2. Regional Disparities Affect BIM Popularity
The promotion of BIM shows significant regional variation. It is much more prevalent in economically developed cities, especially coastal regions, while second- and third-tier cities tend to pay less attention to it. This economic disparity results in BIM being widely used in some areas but scarcely known or applied in others, particularly in inland or less developed regions.
3. Misunderstanding of BIM Concepts Persists
Currently, BIM is mainly used during the design and construction phases in China. Unfortunately, this has led to a misconception of BIM as merely a software tool for creating models, rather than a comprehensive technology or process. Such misunderstandings seriously impede the broader acceptance and effective use of BIM.
4. Growing Government and Large Project Owner Support
Government-led initiatives and large-scale project owners are beginning to recognize the value of BIM. They are increasingly encouraging or requiring its use in design and construction phases, which is a positive step towards wider adoption.
5. Increasing Practical Application in Design and Construction
Many projects have already implemented BIM technology to a significant extent, particularly during design and construction stages, indicating progress in practical use.
