A Clear-Eyed Perspective on BIM Consulting

BIM consulting has become a familiar concept within the construction industry, with many companies now focusing on this service. However, unresolved issues and a lack of adjustment can hinder both the industry’s progress and the growth of individual enterprises and teams.

1. Serious Homogenization

There is little differentiation between companies, making it seem like everyone offers the same capabilities. Competition is often limited to technology, relationships, and pricing, resembling traditional project bidding. As a result, core competencies remain unclear, and many firms risk becoming mere technical labor providers.

2. Overly Broad Service Offerings

Many BIM teams claim to cover a wide range of services across the three major project stages. In contrast, only a few, like Lu Ban, focus solely on BIM applications during construction. Given the extensive BIM technology industry chain, each company should define its niche and develop unique competitive advantages.

3. Reckless Development of Large-scale BIM Systems and Platforms

The challenges and complexities of developing BIM systems are often underestimated. Starting large-scale BIM platform development without clear understanding can lead to significant financial and labor losses. Many teams, overwhelmed by diverse customer demands and the desire for more powerful BIM platforms, have embarked on such projects. This approach carries high risks, particularly with limited funding and project scope, turning the effort into a costly learning experience.

The demand for robust databases continues to grow—not due to lack of progress in software, but because user expectations are rapidly expanding. Users seek adaptability for various and complex engineering projects, enhanced interaction, improved efficiency, and faster computing. Since BIM software operates in 3D or higher dimensions, substantial investment is required for functional and interactive development. After over a decade of domestic and international efforts, the entry barrier remains high, often requiring investments of at least 50 million yuan. Smaller budgets tend to be wasted.

For example, Guanglian Da’s IPO raised more than 1 billion yuan, backed by a large user base of computational software tools. Yet, it has not made significant breakthroughs in BIM systems. This puts into perspective the limited results expected from initial projects funded with only a few million yuan.

4. Excessive Marketing

Over-marketing is a real concern. It can create unrealistic expectations among clients, leading to disappointment and negative feedback. Although BIM technology is still in its early stages and its current applications are relatively limited, it already offers substantial value. However, portraying BIM as an all-powerful solution with few successful implementations ultimately harms both customer trust and industry credibility.

This issue often stems from BIM consulting teams lacking a clear service positioning and failing to establish unique strengths, which results in overselling their capabilities.

5. Insufficient Industry Collaboration and Fragmented Efforts

Domestic BIM companies often lack cooperation, failing to leverage the existing systems and achievements of local manufacturers. Starting from scratch is risky, especially in this emerging field characterized by high investment and uncertainty. With business models still evolving, blindly investing in large system development is not advisable.

Instead, understanding and utilizing existing manufacturers’ systems, identifying one’s own market position, and focusing on sustainable profit generation are crucial for success.

In conclusion, for BIM consulting firms to grow stronger and more competitive, they must address the issues highlighted above.
