Why do design institutes adopt BIM technology? Based on experiences from numerous BIM design consulting projects in China over recent years, design institutes that have embraced BIM can generally be categorized into the following types:
1. Insightful Pioneers: In some design institutes, forward-thinking individuals recognize the advantages of BIM early on and aim to gain a competitive edge by integrating BIM into their design processes.
2. Problem Solvers: Some institutes face challenges that traditional drawing tools cannot address—such as collaborative design on large-scale projects, buildings with complex shapes, or the need for green building analysis. These difficulties drive them to seek BIM technology as a better solution.
3. Responders to Client or International Collaboration Requirements: Certain projects, like those from the Swire Group or Shanghai Center Project, mandate the use of BIM technology. Additionally, foreign design firms working with Chinese institutes often require BIM for cooperation during schematic or preliminary design phases. Although such demands are not yet widespread in China, an increasing number of real estate developers are recognizing BIM’s value and pushing for its adoption, making this trend more prominent.
Overall, it is clear that the adoption of BIM technology in design institutes is an inevitable development in the industry.
