Key Features Every BIM Platform Should Offer

Today, the editor of the BIM Architecture Training Network will discuss BIM platforms and their essential requirements. A BIM platform must meet at least three fundamental criteria:

  1. 3D model creation and visualization;
  2. Support for collaborative work;
  3. Data collection and processing.

If the first condition is missing, it becomes impossible to visually represent various data. Only by constructing a three-dimensional model can construction projects be described more vividly, intuitively, and from multiple perspectives.

Without the second condition, it cannot truly be called a platform. The core purpose of a platform is to unify the diverse roles involved in the project workflow. Building models and applying BIM is not the responsibility of a single engineer; it requires a collaborative team effort. This team usually includes design, construction, and operational personnel involved throughout different project phases.

However, coordinating engineers across different parties over an extended period is challenging. Some suggest simply transmitting BIM-generated files over the network, but this approach often leads to excessive data transfers and multiple versions of the model. Therefore, effective BIM platforms must support collaboration through technologies such as Client/Server (C/S), Browser/Server (B/S), or cloud-based models. These platforms maintain a centralized model database on the server, allowing BIM teams to retrieve relevant parameters via clients or browsers, quickly perform local modeling, and promptly update the server with all parties’ contributions.

The third condition is equally critical. Without it, the platform is essentially lifeless. During BIM application, the model serves as a window displaying various entity parameters and attributes. If the data in all models is not synchronized and consistent with the actual construction progress, BIM implementation cannot be deemed successful.

Earlier discussions highlighted the importance of managing extensive data points. In construction management, continuously capturing on-site data and integrating it into the model is key. This process transforms the model into a “living” representation that fully leverages BIM’s advantages.

From this perspective, building a BIM platform requires careful consideration of these three fundamental conditions. Neglecting any of them will only increase costs and reduce efficiency, resulting in diminished outcomes.
