What are the requirements for BIM training? This is a frequently asked question at the BIM Building Training Network. Honestly, there is no one-size-fits-all answer, since BIM is a relatively new technology open to anyone interested in learning it. However, that may sound evasive. As the editor of BIM Building Training Network, I’d like to provide a concise overview of the prerequisites for our BIM training courses.
Currently, our BIM training primarily targets design institutes and construction companies. For design professionals, our requirements are straightforward. First, a solid foundation in CAD is essential. BIM still relies heavily on CAD drawings, as models are often built using BIM software based on floor plans. Therefore, proficiency in CAD is necessary. Second, trainees must be able to interpret construction drawings accurately. While some may consider this obvious, it’s not always the case. In fact, I have encountered students from design institutes who struggled to understand certain construction drawings, so this skill is crucial.
For construction companies, we recommend that BIM technicians come from a blend of departments, including budgeting, accounting, and on-site construction management. The budgeting team usually has experience establishing BIM models, while on-site managers possess a practical understanding of construction requirements. This combination helps ensure that the construction models are accurate and applicable. In general, a BIM technician should specialize in one area, have a working knowledge of related fields, be proficient with BIM software, and possess strong communication skills.
Of course, all these requirements assume the trainee holds a university degree in architecture or a related field. If someone is pursuing BIM training purely out of personal interest, we generally advise against it, as the skills learned are intended for professional application.
