The BIM application capabilities of construction engineering technology and management professionals are categorized as shown in Figure 1. The main aspects of each capability are described below:
Figure 1: BIM Application Capability Categories
BIM Software Operation Capability: This refers to the proficiency of engineering or management personnel in operating one or more BIM software tools.
BIM Model Production Capability: This involves the ability to create models for various disciplines and purposes within engineering projects using BIM modeling software. Examples include building models, structural models, site models, mechanical and electrical models, performance analysis models, and safety warning models.
BIM Model Application Capability: This is the skill to analyze, simulate, and optimize different tasks at various stages of engineering projects by utilizing BIM models. Typical applications include scheme demonstrations, performance analyses, design reviews, and construction process simulations.
BIM Environment Establishment Capability: This capability entails setting up the technical environment necessary for effective BIM implementation in engineering projects. It covers delivery standards, workflows, model element libraries, software, hardware, and network infrastructure.
BIM Project Management Capability: This refers to the ability to manage and coordinate the project team to meet BIM application objectives. It includes defining the specific BIM applications for the project, as well as establishing and training the project team’s BIM skills.
BIM Business Integration Capability: This is the ability to align BIM applications with an enterprise’s business goals. It involves confirming BIM’s business value, calculating and evaluating BIM investment returns, and developing new business models.
