What are some common misconceptions about the advanced application of BIM technology in construction companies? Based on the current situation in our country, several misunderstandings stand out:
First, there is a lack of understanding of BIM technology. Some companies want to implement it but do not fully grasp its capabilities, making it difficult for them to define clear requirements. For example, some say they want to achieve virtual construction but cannot specify what exactly virtual construction should accomplish because they don’t understand BIM thoroughly.
Second, even when companies understand BIM technology, they often lack familiarity with the software development process related to BIM. This frequently results in unrealistic expectations. For instance, a company might expect a software project to be completed within six months without appreciating the complexity and workload involved, which is rarely feasible.
The third misconception is the desire for quick success and immediate benefits. Some companies expect to popularize BIM technology within a month, disregarding the practical challenges and time needed for proper implementation.
Given these challenges, what advice can we offer construction companies aiming for deeper integration of BIM technology?
Firstly, it is essential to thoroughly learn and master BIM technology. Genuine adoption requires a solid understanding and hands-on knowledge.
Secondly, companies should clearly articulate their specific needs before deciding which software to use and outlining the steps to take.
Thirdly, it is important to respect objective realities and consult with relevant experts when necessary.
Fourth, implement BIM applications gradually, in a step-by-step manner. Deep integration typically involves three application scenarios. A practical approach is to start with the first scenario—methods already used abroad but not yet adopted in China. Begin by applying BIM to some extent, then evaluate its effectiveness both locally and internationally. If it proves useful, consider expanding and integrating its applications further.
These are some personal thoughts, and I look forward to discussing them with everyone.
