As BIM continues to gain widespread adoption in China, its use during the construction phase is also expanding. Today, the editor of BIM Building Training Network provides a summary of the key applications of BIM in the current construction stage.
1) Design Visualization Based on BIM
Starting from 2D design drawings, software like Revit is used to develop architectural, structural, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) BIM models for projects. This allows dynamic visualization of the design, enabling owners and construction teams to intuitively understand the plans, verify their feasibility, identify potential issues early, and collaborate with designers to resolve them before construction begins.
Popular BIM modeling software includes Autodesk Revit Architecture/Structure/MEP, Bentley Architecture, and Graphisoft ArchiCAD.
2) BIM-Based Clash Detection and Construction Simulation
BIM models of buildings, structures, and MEP systems are imported into specialized clash detection and construction simulation software using IFC or .rvt files. This enables comprehensive clash analysis of structural components and pipelines, as well as simulation of the entire construction process or critical project phases. Early detection of design conflicts helps minimize changes during construction and optimize construction schedules and resource allocation.
Commonly used software for these purposes includes Autodesk Navisworks, Bentley Navigator, and the BIM-based 4D dynamic management system for engineering projects developed by our research team at Tsinghua University.
3) Engineering Deepening Design Using BIM
Using structural and equipment pipeline BIM models for detailed engineering design is a significant aspect of BIM application during construction. There are two main approaches:
- Import the BIM model into specialized design software via IFC or .rvt files for detailed design tasks. For example, Tekla is used for detailed steel structure design and complex nodes, while CATIA handles complex irregular structures and curtain wall designs.
- Based on clash detection results, refine and improve professional designs—such as structures, plumbing, electrical networks, and equipment—directly within BIM modeling software. For instance, Revit Architecture/Structure/MEP is used for modeling and detailed design, with Navisworks applied for clash detection.
4) BIM-Based Construction Project Management
Currently, commercial BIM construction project management software remains limited both domestically and internationally. However, the series of BIM-based 4D construction management software developed by Tsinghua University is widely recognized and applied in the industry.
This approach integrates BIM with 4D technology by creating an IFC-based 4D construction information model that links 3D building and site models with construction progress. It also incorporates information on resources, safety, quality, and site layout. This enables comprehensive 4D dynamic management and visualization of construction progress, manpower, materials, equipment, costs, safety, quality, and site organization through BIM and network technologies.
The above is a summary of the main BIM applications in the current construction phase, offered by the editor for further discussion.
