Will BIM Development Replace Cost Engineers?

This year, with the growing adoption of BIM Technology across various fields, engineering cost professionals may find themselves questioning their role. Since BIM can handle quantity calculations and cost indicators efficiently, completing cost-related tasks quickly, some may wonder if cost engineers will still be necessary.

Indeed, BIM is rapidly advancing in China. The increasing number of pilot projects, implementations, and supportive policies has raised concerns among cost engineers. Today, we will explore how cost engineers can adapt and thrive in a future where BIM technology is becoming more widespread.

To understand this better, it’s important to consider the application of BIM globally. Compared to domestic practices, BIM has been adopted earlier and more maturely abroad, making it easier to draw comparisons by looking at foreign companies. Overseas, cost control professionals are known as quantity surveyors or “Cost Managers” by project owners. Their responsibilities cover cost control throughout the entire project lifecycle, which is a broader scope than that of domestic cost engineers, who mainly focus on quantity calculations and rarely engage in full-process cost management.

Therefore, the future of cost engineers in China must be analyzed within the specific context of the domestic engineering cost industry.

1. It must be acknowledged that BIM offers many advantages, but its widespread adoption in China still faces significant challenges. In real-world projects, no software can replace the expertise and judgment of a skilled cost engineer. Engineering cost management in China involves not only economic calculations but also strategic negotiation and communication. An outstanding cost engineer can influence overall project control. Coordinating cost standards with engineering benefits requires balancing subtle interests and trade-offs among various stakeholders.

2. Many cost management software solutions essentially digitize engineering experience, but numerous practical challenges cannot yet be fully addressed by BIM models. Cost engineers have varying interpretations of project progress and accuracy, which leads to different cost control strategies and approaches for the same project. Regardless of how advanced software becomes, mastering fundamental cost knowledge, continuously improving skills, and creating added value remain essential for cost engineers to demonstrate their worth.

3. Whether viewed as a platform or a tool, BIM users have diverse expectations for its application. Currently, BIM struggles to meet all these different demands. There are also many types of BIM models, raising the question: who can effectively select and manage these models? The answer lies with cost engineers who not only understand how to communicate with people but are also fluent in engineering terminology and computational programs.

In conclusion, despite the rise of new technologies, cost engineers will continue to play a vital role in the engineering cost industry. Those who keep learning and evolving will gain greater recognition and value within their organizations.
