Some people describe BIM as merely a type of “tool” designed to simplify previously complex tasks and handle difficult ones with ease. But is it really just a tool?
After the construction drawings are completed, BIM still finds applications in 4D simulation, although today it is primarily used for visualization purposes. If BIM can be better integrated with later operational phases, I believe this could become a major breakthrough for its future development. Additionally, 5D applications that incorporate cost dimensions are quietly making their way into project management processes.
BIM technology relies heavily on designers, but throughout the process, it can inspire them, enhancing their freedom, logical thinking, and project control completeness. If BIM is to develop sustainably and reasonably, it should assume a role similar to the CPU in a computer—acting as an information hub and processing center.
However, regardless of the outcome, one thing remains clear: BIM does not bring fundamental innovation as some claim. Instead, it represents an improvement that influences how the construction industry operates. It can be said that while using BIM does not guarantee a project will be completed perfectly, most high-quality projects in the future are likely to incorporate BIM.
The effectiveness of BIM varies significantly depending on the project and its specific requirements. The final results may be critical, construction-oriented, or presented as added value. In some projects, BIM outputs include auxiliary drawings and various charts that directly aid construction, while in others, BIM serves primarily as a communication and coordination model between different disciplines. This diversity has also given rise to some misconceptions, such as the idea that BIM is simply a “tool,” a notion that is gradually spreading.
It is clear that BIM is far more than just a tool to simplify complexity or refine rough processes in the construction industry. When given more opportunities, its potential exceeds expectations.
