Recently, I have received numerous inquiries from companies seeking advice on how to learn BIM effectively. Today, I would like to share some personal suggestions based on my company’s experience in organizing enterprise-level BIM training.
First and foremost, it is crucial to focus on learning BIM through actual project application rather than just theoretical software operation. While it is helpful to practice by drawing completed projects initially to get familiar with the software, I strongly recommend boldly applying BIM directly to live projects as soon as possible. Understandably, many colleagues worry that unfamiliarity might cause delays in project progress—this risk is real. In my experience, there is no perfect way around this; the first attempts will inevitably take longer and encounter various challenges. However, only by addressing these issues through hands-on practice can one truly master BIM software and its design logic, which differs significantly from traditional methods. This practical experience is an essential step that no individual or team can skip. Without applying BIM in real projects, it is unlikely that one will ever fully master BIM design.
Secondly, I recommend practicing BIM as a project team. This means selecting an appropriate project and having all team members use BIM software collaboratively to research and advance the project together. This approach significantly reduces information loss during project development, encourages mutual learning and support among team members, and enables effective BIM collaborative design within the team. Moreover, if BIM software is being used for construction drawing design, it is beneficial for team members to already have some foundation in construction drawing. Without this background, they may feel lost, require frequent rework, and find it difficult to appreciate and explore the advantages of BIM for construction drawing design.
I hope these personal suggestions will be helpful to enterprises eager to learn and implement BIM.
