This Japanese-style residential project is situated in a densely built urban neighborhood in Osaka. The site backs onto a high retaining wall, surrounded by closely packed buildings. The client requested a two-generation family home that prioritizes indoor privacy while integrating greenery to harmonize with the cityscape. Our goal was to design spacious interiors that welcome ample natural light yet shield occupants from visual intrusion. We also took into account potential future redevelopment in the surrounding area.

To achieve a sense of visual depth and extension, we strategically utilized narrow slits and openings between building volumes. These gaps isolate the residence from its surroundings, creating an illusion of space extending beyond the immediate view. Natural light filters through these openings, reflecting off surfaces like glass, concrete, and sprayed finishes, which accentuates the diverse textures and colors, inviting occupants to experience subtle material contrasts.

The residence is composed of multiple volumes, each finished with distinct materials such as wood, concrete, and plaster. These volumes are arranged with staggered spacing, allowing light and airflow to penetrate through the gaps. Upon entering via a tree-lined passageway, visitors first encounter an atrium that spans from the first to the third floor. From there, a staircase, cantilevered from a reinforced concrete wall, leads upward.

The younger generation occupies the first and second floors, with bedrooms and guest rooms on the first floor, and the living, dining, and kitchen (LDK) areas along with bathrooms and toilets on the second floor. The older generation lives on the third floor, which includes a private room, LDK, bathroom, and toilet.

The courtyard staircase, visible from the kitchen and dining areas, resembles an outdoor stairway, imparting a feeling of openness and freedom. An open-air courtyard at the entrance extends up to the third floor, flanked by tall trees along the passage from the LDK. During the day, natural light floods the interiors, while at night, interior lighting reflects on various textured surfaces, creating an inviting depth for those passing by.
