Recently, the BIM Building Training Network has received numerous inquiries about BIM certification. The current BIM training market offers a variety of so-called BIM certificates, which has left many students confused. They often wonder whether these BIM certificates will truly benefit their future career paths. Today, with insights from industry experts, let’s clarify this issue.
In our country, professional certificates can generally be categorized into four types:
- Diplomas: These reflect an individual’s educational background.
- Professional Titles: These serve as recognition of an individual’s professional skills and achievements.
- Professional Qualifications: Like professional titles, these certificates verify an individual’s expertise and accomplishments.
- Course Graduation Certificates: Regardless of their specific name, these certificates prove participation in certain courses or assessments.
The first three types—diplomas, professional titles, and qualifications—are strictly regulated. They must be assessed, reviewed, and issued by government-authorized specialized agencies following formal procedures. The fourth type, the Course Graduation Certificate, is different. In theory, any institution or individual can issue such certificates, including universities, government bodies, industry associations, domestic and international companies, or even individuals. Most BIM certificates currently promoted in the market fall into this category.
Just like products on the market, certificates come with varying levels of quality and presentation. Some have impressive packaging but lack substance, while others may have modest packaging but offer superior quality. Ideally, the certificate’s presentation should match its true value. Similarly, companies often encounter employees who hold numerous certificates but possess average skills, as well as those with fewer certificates but outstanding abilities. The career prospects of these two types of employees are easy to predict. Naturally, the best scenario is when certificates and abilities align.
People invest in education and training hoping to achieve two goals: enhancing their skills and obtaining certificates. However, as we all know, personal career development fundamentally depends on abilities, not just certificates—especially those lacking the necessary skills behind them. At this stage of BIM development, with a growing number of certificates that are essentially just course completion certificates (regardless of the issuing institution or title) flooding the market, and some organizations exaggerating the importance of certificates, it is important to help professionals understand the true relationship between various BIM certificates and career growth.
In conclusion, given the absence of a unified BIM standard in China, focusing solely on acquiring BIM certificates while neglecting actual BIM learning is a misguided approach.
