As BIM technology continues to advance in China, its application during the construction phase is becoming increasingly widespread. But where exactly is BIM being utilized? The editor of BIM Architecture Training Network has compiled a summary to serve as a foundation for further discussion.
1) Design Visualization Using BIM
Starting from 2D design drawings, software such as Revit is used to create architectural, structural, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) BIM models for the project. This approach allows the design results to be visualized dynamically, enabling both owners and contractors to intuitively understand the design scheme. It helps verify design feasibility and identify potential issues early—before construction begins—so that the design team and stakeholders can collaborate to resolve them.
Common BIM modeling software includes Autodesk Revit Architecture/Structure/MEP, Bentley Architecture, and Graphisoft ArchiCAD.
2) Collision Detection and Construction Simulation with BIM
BIM models of buildings, structures, and MEP systems can be imported into specialized collision detection and construction simulation software via IFC or .rvt files. This process facilitates comprehensive clash detection and analysis of structural components and pipelines. Additionally, it allows simulation of the entire construction process or key project stages to detect design issues early, minimize changes during construction, and optimize construction plans and resource allocation.
Popular software for these purposes includes Autodesk Navisworks, Bentley Navigator, and the BIM-based 4D dynamic management system for engineering projects developed by our research team at Tsinghua University.
3) Engineering Deepening Design Using BIM
Using BIM models for structural and equipment pipelines during detailed engineering design is a significant aspect of BIM application in the construction phase. There are two main approaches:
- Import the BIM model into professional design software for detailed design via IFC or .rvt files. For example, Tekla is used for detailed steel structure design including complex nodes, while CATIA is employed for intricate irregular structures and curtain wall design.
- Based on collision detection results, adjust, refine, and enhance professional designs—such as structural, plumbing, electrical networks, and equipment—directly within BIM modeling software. Revit Architecture/Structure/MEP is commonly used for modeling and detailed design, and Navisworks is used for collision detection.
4) BIM-based Construction Project Management
Currently, several software solutions enable 4D construction management based on BIM. These platforms integrate BIM with 4D technology by establishing an IFC-based 4D construction information model. This links the 3D building model and construction site with the construction schedule, incorporating data on resources, safety, quality, and site layout.
We have successfully implemented 4D dynamic integrated management of construction progress, labor, materials, equipment, cost, safety, quality, and site layout through BIM and network technology, along with 4D visual simulation of the construction process.
In summary, these points capture the current state of BIM applications during the construction phase in China. Contributions with additional insights are welcome.
