Welcome Letter from BIM Architecture Network to Newcomers

Hello, friends who follow the BIM Architecture Training Network!

By the time you read this, I believe you have developed a keen interest in BIM. However, if you are new to BIM, you might still have many questions. What exactly is BIM? What can it do? I hope my explanation will offer some clarity and inspiration.

So, what exactly is BIM?

Literally, BIM stands for Building Information Modeling. It is a data-driven technology used in engineering design and construction management. BIM integrates a variety of project-related information through parametric models, sharing and transmitting this data throughout the entire lifecycle of a project—from planning and design to operation and maintenance.

This approach enables engineers and technical professionals to accurately understand and efficiently respond to various building information. It provides a solid foundation for collaborative work among design teams, construction entities, and building operation units. As a result, BIM plays a vital role in improving productivity, reducing costs, and shortening construction timelines.

What can BIM actually do?

BIM creates a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of engineering project facilities. It serves as a comprehensive information model that connects data, processes, and resources across all stages of a construction project’s lifecycle. This detailed model offers a complete description of the engineering object and can be utilized by all stakeholders involved.

One of BIM’s key strengths is its unified engineering data source, which helps resolve issues of consistency and global sharing among distributed and diverse engineering data. BIM supports the dynamic creation, management, and sharing of engineering information throughout the entire construction lifecycle.

It’s important to understand: BIM is BIM, and software is software. Software is simply a tool to implement BIM. There is no strict definition of what qualifies as BIM software; any software that reflects the value of BIM processes, aligns with BIM concepts, transmits and carries building information, and uses parametric models can be considered BIM software.

In other words, whether a particular software is labeled as BIM software is less important than whether it effectively contributes to BIM workflows.

BIM is like us—young, full of vitality, and constantly evolving. Just like us, it represents the future and hope!
