RSHP, in collaboration with Tongji University Architectural Design and Research Institute, has won the competition for the Phase II development of the Zhongyuan International Convention and Exhibition Center. Located within the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone and adjacent to the international airport, this project aims to establish an internationally recognized landmark exhibition venue. The design emphasizes high visibility from both ground level and aerial views. It reflects the ZAEZ’s ambition for innovative, contemporary architecture, while the striking roof design pays homage to the region’s rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscape.

The second phase of the project stretches along the east and west sides of a central green space, located south of the first phase. It consists of three main components: the expanded exhibition center, an international conference center, and supporting hotel facilities. The design prioritizes connectivity and modularity, featuring a 1.7-kilometer elevated central spine that links three main entrance halls with exhibition halls, conference spaces, and hotels. This creates an integrated, networked layout that enhances pedestrian accessibility and public engagement. The central corridor’s dual levels separate fast and slow traffic flows as well as exhibition and dining areas, promoting smooth circulation throughout the complex.

The exhibition center features 16 halls and associated facilities on both sides of the central spine. Each standard hall covers approximately 12,500 square meters, measuring 78.5 by 161 meters on the first floor, accommodating a wide range of exhibitions and events. The upper level of the central spine extends through the park via the East Entrance Hall, seamlessly connecting the exhibition space to the grand conference center and nearby hotels. The conference center is distinguished by an impressive suspended roof over the main hall and banquet area, complemented by a large mesh curtain wall that provides transparency and spatial clarity.
The hotel, positioned at the eastern end of the complex, boasts a distinctive roof design and spacious atrium, reinforcing the project’s overall architectural vision. The lower level of the central spine houses dining, retail, and public activity spaces, offering visitors and exhibitors comfortable areas to eat, relax, and enjoy the surrounding architecture and landscaping.

Three prominent entrance halls are strategically located at the east, center, and west ends of the central spine. These halls serve ticketing, security, and other entry functions and connect to the exhibition halls across both upper and lower levels. After security screening, visitors can take an automated walkway on the upper level to quickly reach their designated exhibition areas. The mezzanine-level entrances provide expansive views of the exhibition spaces below, allowing visitors to appreciate the scale before descending via escalators to the main exhibition floor.
The project incorporates sustainable design principles in line with China’s green building standards. Photovoltaic panels will be installed on the main entrance roof to generate renewable energy. Natural daylighting is maximized within the exhibition halls, while rainwater harvesting systems support landscape irrigation. These passive sustainability features underscore the project’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

“Our design for the Zhongyuan International Convention and Exhibition Center blends advanced technology with traditional cultural elements. It delivers a versatile space suited for large-scale exhibitions while standing as a beacon of innovation and technological progress. We aim to create an architectural experience that fosters global industrial connections, highlights local identity, and offers every exhibitor an inspiring and transformative environment.” — Richard Paul, Senior Director and Partner at RSHP Architecture Firm.
