As is well known, BIM software comes in various types, including design, construction, and analysis tools. Today, the BIM Architecture Training Network editor will provide a brief overview of popular BIM design software for your reference. There are five leading companies in the market offering BIM design software: Autodesk, Bentley, Graphisoft/Nemetschek AG, Gery Technology, and Tekla. Below is a summary of the main software products developed by each company:
1. Autodesk – Revit Architecture and More
Autodesk’s Revit series holds the largest market share and is an industry leader. The suite includes Revit Architecture, Revit Structure, and Revit MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing).
2. Bentley – Bentley Architecture and Related Software
Bentley introduced its groundbreaking Bentley Architecture in 2004, following the development of MicroStation TriForma, a professional 3D building modeling software that automatically generates floor plans, sections, elevations, perspectives, and various quantitative reports such as quantity calculations, specifications, and cost estimates.
Other Bentley products include Bentley Structural; Bentley Building Mechanical Systems (covering mechanical, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing); Bentley Building Electrical Systems; Bentley Facilities (equipment management); Bentley PowerCivil (site modeling); Bentley Generative Components (for designing complex geometric shapes); Bentley Interference Manager; and Bentley ProjectWise, a management platform supporting multi-user and multi-project collaboration.
3. Graphisoft/Nemetschek AG – ArchiCAD
ArchiCAD is one of the oldest and still widely used BIM modeling software solutions. It offers interoperability with various programs, including Maxon (for surface creation and animation simulations), ArchiFM (for facility management), and SketchUp (for model creation). ArchiCAD also integrates with several energy consumption and sustainability tools such as Ecotect, Energy+, ARCHIPHISIK, and RIUSKA. Additionally, it includes an extensive library of objects for users.
4. Gery Technology – Digital Project
CATIA, developed by Dassault, is a globally recognized modeling platform widely used in large-scale mechanical design and manufacturing fields such as aerospace and automotive. Digital Project is a customized application software developed by Gery Technology based on CATIA for engineering construction projects, essentially extending CATIA’s core capabilities.
5. Tekla Corp. – Tekla Structures and Xsteel
Xsteel was the first construction software developed by Tekla based on BIM technology. Introduced in the 1990s, it quickly became a widely adopted steel structure detailing design software worldwide.
We hope that through the BIM Architecture Training Network, everyone gains a general understanding of the key BIM design software available today.
