Is BIM Simply Software for Creating 3D Models?

Many people wonder if BIM is simply software for creating 3D graphics. Based on current applications in China, it appears that most organizations use BIM primarily to construct various 3D models. However, this does not mean BIM is just a modeling tool, even though it does require software support.

BIM Architecture Training Network suggests that to properly answer this question, we should consider the following points:

First, from the definition of BIM, according to the American BIM standard, it consists of three key elements:

  1. BIM is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a facility (construction project).
  2. BIM serves as a shared knowledge resource—a process for sharing facility information to provide a reliable basis for all decisions throughout the entire lifecycle of the facility, from concept to demolition.
  3. At different project stages, various stakeholders insert, extract, update, and modify information in BIM to support and reflect their collaborative responsibilities.

Second, BIM has four major features that set it apart:

  1. Visualization: The 3D spatial model is intuitive and vivid, making it easier to understand the project.
  2. Coordination: Construction projects involve owners, builders, contractors, and designers who need to collaborate. Traditional meetings to resolve issues can waste time and resources and delay progress. BIM integrates drawings from multiple disciplines into a multidimensional model that clearly highlights potential problems, reducing coordination efforts significantly.
  3. Simulation: Using 4D BIM models (which include the time dimension) allows simulation of the construction schedule, while 5D BIM models (including time and cost) enable cost control throughout the project lifecycle.
  4. Optimization: Establishing a 3D model helps identify unreasonable design elements, avoid clashes, and adjust complex sub-tasks in advance. This leads to better construction planning, shorter schedules, and reduced project costs.

Finally, considering the value BIM brings to enterprises, BIM Architecture Training Network points out several benefits:

  • Based on BIM 3D models, 3D rendering and animations can be produced, offering a realistic and direct visual impact. This greatly enhances the accuracy and efficiency of renderings, providing owners with more intuitive presentations and improving their chances of winning bids.
  • BIM saves labor and increases the effective working time of management personnel.
  • It reduces material waste and improves material utilization rates.
  • Overall, BIM improves production management efficiency.

From the above, it is clear that BIM is not merely software for drawing three-dimensional graphics. As BIM Architecture Training Network emphasized, although BIM applications require software support, they go far beyond simple modeling. This conclusion is beyond doubt.
