1. IFC Data Exchange Standard
Construction projects are complex and involve a wide range of activities, multiple participants, long lifecycles, and various software products. BIM must support collaboration among hundreds or even thousands of project stakeholders using diverse software tools. The primary challenge is the exchange and sharing of building information. The key to solving this challenge lies in establishing standards. A unified standard acts as a common language for communication between different systems. To address this, the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard was developed.
The IFC data model is an open, publicly available standard that is not controlled by any single supplier or group. It is an object-oriented file format based on data models developed by buildingSMART to enable data interoperability across the construction industry. IFC is widely used within BIM workflows. Its introduction provides the construction sector with an intermediate data standard independent of any specific software system, suitable for describing product data throughout the entire building lifecycle. IFC supports information exchange and sharing across different stages of a building’s lifecycle, both internally and externally.
The information models described by IFC standards are structured across four functional levels: resource layer, core layer, interaction layer, and domain layer. Each level contains specific information description modules that follow the “principle of gravity.” This means each level can only reference resources from the same or lower levels, but not from higher levels. Such a design ensures that changes in upper-level resources do not affect lower-level resources, maintaining stability in the information description.
2. 3D Graphics Platform
The 3D graphics platform serves as the foundational support for BIM modeling and related BIM products. It addresses the requirements for data capacity, display speed, model construction and editing efficiency, as well as rendering quality and speed. Key technologies involved include:
- Graphic database technology: supporting geometric data, spatial indexing, collaborative editing of model data, data caching, and dynamic loading.
- Entity Boolean operation technology.
- Parameterized model description technology: enabling constraint-based, parameterized model template instantiation for modeling.
- Big model data visualization technology.
- Efficient organization and rendering of large-scale scene data.
Given the existence of multiple BIM modeling software products, data exchange between different professional and business models must comply with the IFC data standard. This also facilitates data exchange between various modeling software platforms.
