Emerging Trends in BIM for Enhancing Safety in the Construction Industry

Safety has always been a critical concern in the construction industry, serving as a key indicator throughout construction projects. Today, we will explore the emerging trends in the application of BIM (Building Information Modeling) for enhancing safety in construction. From the broad scope of BIM applications, it is clear that BIM Safety plays a vital role across various stages of a building’s lifecycle, acting as an essential, ongoing indicator.

The growing use of BIM in the construction sector raises an important question: can these modeling technologies directly influence the safety of construction workers? According to AGC (2010), BIM applications span a wide range of functions, including visualization, scope definition, transaction coordination, collision detection and avoidance, design validation, construction scheduling, logistics planning, marketing, multi-scenario comparison, walkthrough simulations, virtual modeling, and visual analysis.

The key advantages of BIM include:

  1. Assisting in defining the project scope during bidding and procurement phases;
  2. Verifying scope details for various analyses, such as cost estimation;
  3. Coordinating construction workflows, even in simple cases;
  4. Presenting project proposals effectively for marketing purposes;
  5. Detecting clashes between building components, such as pipe systems intersecting structural elements;
  6. Visualizing the structure within a simulated environment;
  7. Reducing on-site errors and the need for corrections;
  8. Providing more accurate simulations of site conditions, which facilitates off-site prefabrication of materials—often leading to higher quality at lower costs;
  9. Enabling comprehensive planning by considering multiple schedule options, site logistics, alternative lifting strategies, and associated costs;
  10. Allowing non-technical stakeholders, such as small business owners and homeowners, to better understand the final product;
  11. Decreasing the number of callbacks, thereby reducing profit margin losses.

While none of these points explicitly reference worker safety, some features—particularly collision detection—can indirectly improve safety conditions. For example, the installation of mechanical and electrical systems often involves complex pipeline layouts within ceiling spaces, including fire sprinkler systems and other equipment. Discovering clashes only after installation leads to rework, which involves dismantling and reinstalling components. Such rework typically requires workers to operate in confined spaces, where factors like existing infrastructure, site access, fall protection, and ergonomics pose safety challenges.

Proactively conducting collision detection before construction starts can significantly reduce rework, thereby enhancing overall safety. BIM supports this by enabling more components to be prefabricated off-site and transported to the construction site. Prefabrication in controlled environments—such as specialized fabrication facilities—generally produces higher quality components and reduces on-site risks.

Despite these potential benefits, the construction industry has yet to fully adopt BIM as a dedicated tool for improving worker safety. To evaluate BIM’s effectiveness on construction projects, six key performance indicators (KPIs) are commonly used:

  • Quality control (specifically rework rates);
  • Project completion timeliness;
  • Cost management;
  • Safety, measured by lost work time;
  • Unit pricing;
  • Work quantity per hour.

In summary, while contractors have not yet widely recognized BIM’s direct impact on enhancing worker safety, there is a shared understanding of its indirect benefits. Contractors generally agree that BIM can improve construction quality and reduce rework, which contributes to lowering the incidence of accidents on the job site.
