BIM Software vs. Traditional Drawing Software: Key Differences Explained

Currently, there are over 20 types of BIM software commonly used in the market. However, many claim to be BIM software but lack the basic features that define true BIM applications. Today, we will clarify the differences between BIM software and traditional drawing software.

1. The core elements of BIM software are three-dimensional components, which are converted into two-dimensional graphical representations. The simplest conversion method is direct projection, but the resulting drawings cannot be used as engineering blueprints. They require simplification and adjustment according to drawing standards or conventional representations, with different depths illustrated based on drawing types and scales. In contrast, 2D CAD software represents 3D components purely through 2D lines, allowing freeform modification. Even object-oriented localization software, such as Tianzheng, offers a high degree of flexibility in expression.

2. Components in BIM software are parameterized and interconnected with their parameters. Annotations and tags correspond directly to components, extracting their information and linking changes one-to-one. This feature influences many other aspects of BIM software. Conversely, in 2D CAD software, annotations and markings are usually independent from the main components and can be edited separately.

3. Views in BIM software are generated from sectional projections of 3D models. Plans, elevations, and sections are all derived directly from the model. Although you can adjust sectional positions, heights, and visibility rules for component categories, these views maintain stricter consistency. Meanwhile, 2D CAD software offers much more flexibility, primarily guided by the need to meet expression requirements.

4. BIM documentation functions as a comprehensive database, with drawings being just one form of representation. All drawings, views, and statistical tables are extracted from and interconnected within this database. This contrasts sharply with traditional 2D CAD, where drawings form loosely structured documents with less interrelation.

From these points, it’s clear that the differences between BIM software and traditional drawing software are significant. With this understanding, everyone’s recognition of what truly defines BIM software should greatly improve.
