Expert Insights: Technical Architecture of BIM in Engineering Construction

Today, we will explore the technical architecture of BIM applications in engineering construction from an expert perspective, aiming to provide valuable insights for both enterprises and individuals.

1) Interface Layer: This layer employs independently developed BIM data interfaces and exchange engines, offering functionalities such as IFC file import and export, IFC format model parsing, conversion of non-IFC building information, BIM database storage and access, permission control, and multi-user concurrent management. It enables the transfer of models and information from various data sources and formats into the system, facilitating the exchange, integration, and application of both IFC and non-IFC format models. Data sources include BIM models created using proprietary building construction BIM modeling systems like BIMMS and Revit, 3D models from software such as AutoCAD, CATIA, 3DSMAX, and progress data generated by project management tools like MS Project.

2) Data Layer: Engineering data during construction is categorized into structured BIM data, unstructured document data, and organizational/process information that describes the creation of engineering data. Structured BIM data is stored and managed in databases based on IFC standards. Document data is handled via document management systems, while organizational and process information resides in dedicated databases. By establishing mapping and conversion mechanisms between BIM object models and relational data schemas, BIM databases can be implemented using relational database systems such as SQL Server.

3) Platform Layer: This layer includes the self-developed BIM data integration and management platform, BIMSDISP, along with a web-based 4D visualization platform. BIMSDISP is responsible for reading, saving, extracting, integrating, and validating BIM data, managing unstructured data, and controlling organizational and process information. It supports the creation of sub-information models tailored for professional applications and enables BIM-based construction software solutions. The web-based 4D visualization platform offers functionalities like view transformation, graphic control, and dynamic roaming using OpenGL, supporting networked 4D construction management and seamless information exchange across engineering projects.

4) Model Layer: Leveraging the BIM data integration platform, this layer generates specific sub-information models to meet various application needs. Examples include construction progress models, resource management models, and safety management models. These sub-models provide essential data support for a range of specialized construction management software in the application layer.

5) Application Layer: This layer consists of a series of independently developed BIM-based 4D construction management software solutions. These include a 4D dynamic management system for engineering projects, a 4D safety and conflict analysis system, a construction optimization system, and a comprehensive project management system. Together, they offer functionalities such as 4D construction progress tracking, resource allocation, quality control, cost management, site supervision, safety and conflict analysis, collision detection between design and construction, process optimization, and 4D simulation, all powered by BIM and network technologies.

In summary, we have outlined the expert perspective on the technical architecture of BIM applications in engineering construction, hoping to inspire enterprises and individuals currently utilizing or planning to adopt BIM technology.
