Many countries have established BIM standards tailored to their specific needs, such as the NBIMS standard in the United States. However, China’s research on BIM technology application started relatively late, and it has yet to develop a unified BIM standard. Standards suited to the domestic construction market are still under development. In recent years, BIM technology has rapidly advanced in China, with many large-scale projects gradually adopting it, some achieving notable success. The key characteristics of BIM technology include:
1. Completeness: BIM technology creates information models that not only capture the 3D geometric data of construction objects but also detail engineering designs. This includes information such as the names, materials, types, and performance characteristics of components within a project. Each element can have detailed parameters specified, like material heat resistance limits or strength. Additionally, logical relationships between objects or between main and sub-objects are thoroughly described.
2. Relevance: BIM builds multidimensional information models where components are interconnected and easily identifiable. The system can analyze and process model data automatically or manually, generating corresponding data files. When any model element changes, all related objects and files update accordingly, ensuring data consistency and synchronization.
3. Visualization: Unlike traditional representations using points, lines, and surfaces, BIM technology presents components as realistic 3D physical models. This visualization aids in understanding real-world effects and supports management decisions throughout design, construction, and operational phases.
4. Consistency: Across different project stages, BIM maintains consistent model information without requiring repeated data entry. Adjusting or modifying model elements is done through property changes rather than creating new models, preventing duplication and ensuring uniformity.
5. Collaboration: BIM facilitates interdisciplinary coordination by allowing designers from various fields to contribute their specialized designs within an integrated 3D model. It supports clash detection, generates collision reports, and promotes collaborative workflows among disciplines.
6. Simulation: Beyond visual representation, BIM can simulate and analyze factors such as energy efficiency, sunlight exposure, and heat conduction. During bidding and construction, 4D simulations (3D plus time) can be performed. In later operation stages, simulations for fire safety and earthquake evacuation are possible.
7. Optimization: BIM models provide accurate building information and can reflect changes over time. When combined with optimization tools, they help create more efficient designs and construction plans, significantly shortening project timelines, reducing costs, and improving overall quality.
8. Drawing Capabilities: BIM can automatically generate design and fabrication drawings. After model collision checks and revisions, it produces plans, elevations, sections, reserved openings, and detailed component drawings.
