BIM Q&A: Common Challenges in Implementing BIM Technology

As BIM technology continues to develop and mature, various favorable conditions have accelerated its widespread adoption. However, many practical challenges and limitations still hinder its application. Let’s explore some of the specific issues encountered during the implementation of BIM technology.

BIM Q&A | What problems may arise during the application of BIM technology?

1. Lack of Standardized Metrics and Regulations
The absence of unified measurement indicators and constraints often leads to a lack of clear rules and regulations during implementation. While economic benefits are typically prioritized, early-stage BIM adoption can leave personnel uncertain about processes. Construction teams may struggle to make decisions, and work may overlap or be overlooked. Additionally, inconsistent standards among project participants can create information barriers, increasing communication costs. These factors result in inefficiencies, project delays, higher costs, and reduced overall effectiveness.

2. Challenges with Software Familiarity and Integration
Engineering and construction teams often lack familiarity with BIM software, making it difficult to integrate with existing projects. Initial adoption tends to be slow, and leadership may be hesitant to fully embrace BIM, which hampers timely and accurate decision-making. In China, introducing BIM and training professionals requires significant investment, raising costs substantially. Although BIM theoretically reduces construction expenses, this benefit depends on deep software expertise and experience. Innovation is essential to drive technological progress, but traditional mindsets can limit enthusiasm for exploration. Currently, BIM is mainly utilized by large state-owned enterprises, while private and smaller companies face challenges in adoption.

3. Immature Supporting Software and Resistance to Transparency
Since BIM is relatively new in China, supporting software remains imperfect. Inaccurate or rough modeling data can misguide construction efforts. Moreover, engineering projects involve complex funding sources and intertwined interests. The transparency BIM brings can threaten vested interests, leading to resistance against its promotion.

These are some of the key challenges faced when applying BIM technology. Different perspectives exist, but I hope this overview helps shed light on the topic for everyone!
