Currently, BIM technology in China is still in its early stages. Many owners are introduced to BIM primarily for reasons such as cost reduction and compliance with government regulations. Their understanding and practical use of BIM remain limited. Addressing challenges like information silos, gaps, and asymmetry in construction engineering requires a scientific and systematic approach. This is an urgent issue that demands focused research and solutions.

There are three main challenges that owners face when expanding BIM applications:
1. High initial investment: For companies already actively using BIM, the costs associated with the technology are manageable. However, for those new to BIM, the upfront expenses related to software acquisition, organizational changes, and personnel training represent significant sunk costs that cannot be overlooked.
2. Complex guidance and standards: Although the government strongly promotes BIM adoption, the mandatory standards and guidance often lack clear and concise explanations tailored for owners—such as the specific contract formats and information requirements. This lack of clarity hinders owners’ understanding of BIM implementation plans and scope, creating major obstacles to wider adoption.
3. Shortage of skilled BIM professionals: Owners who aim to lead project development or manage multiple construction plans need a workforce of experienced BIM specialists capable of quickly driving BIM adoption. The current scarcity of such skilled technicians places considerable time and financial strain on projects, representing the biggest challenge at present.
To overcome these obstacles, many consulting firms have formed specialized BIM teams to offer expert consulting services directly to owners. This approach benefits owners by providing an independent, third-party perspective that facilitates clearer communication and a better understanding of the project’s real status.
That concludes the overview of the three major challenges in applying BIM technology. Everyone may have different viewpoints, but I hope this article offers helpful insights!
