Located in Kensington, an eastern suburb of Sydney, the Zigzag Residence presents a striking fusion of old and new architectural styles. The client, returning to their hometown, sought a distinctive living environment that offers a unique architectural experience amidst traditional federal bungalows.

The residence’s distinctive pleated roof, as the name suggests, resembles a bold concerto in form. Inspired by palm leaves that offer shading, the roof appears to float gracefully, echoing the nearby waterways. It extends towards Centenary Park and Botany Bay, boldly connecting to the existing federal villa by linking the living room, dining room, and kitchen. The cantilevered section seamlessly integrates with the original roof’s linear ceiling plane. To address the theoretical 200-year flood event, a unique ‘dock’ structure has been incorporated into the rear terrace design.

The staircase serves as the architectural backbone of the home. Taking full advantage of the site’s slope and scale, it stands out as a focal point within the timeless design. This bold feature creates a striking transition between the old and new spaces. Colorful leaf-patterned columns add character to the otherwise minimalist composition.

The interior layout is carefully designed around the client’s collection of artworks and souvenirs. Thoughtful lighting enhances these pieces, spotlighting them throughout the home.

While using standard materials, the design treats them in a unique way that redefines their appearance. Gypsum boards are taped to form a zigzag pattern, complemented by Oregon wood concrete, recycled BC plywood, and Venetian plaster applied to structural posts. This craftsmanship highlights the materials distinctively, making the house truly stand out.
