BIM Architecture: Yunzhu Lake Tourist Center by Diyoukuang and Mystery House Design Studios

This project is situated within the Linhu Resort in Shanxi Province, an area transformed from a former coal mining site. It is surrounded by the rolling landscapes of the Loess Plateau. The client offers water sports and accommodation facilities here. Our design focus is the visitor center, which includes ticket offices, consultation rooms, staff offices, and public restrooms. The building’s distinctive design draws inspiration from the local terrain and the specific needs of our client.

The ticket office area functions to clearly define the inner and outer boundaries of the site. During the design process, we considered integrating Kevin Lynch’s five elements from his book “City Impressions.” Although Lynch’s elements are standards for urban recognition rather than for a single building, combining the five—Path, Edge, District, Node, and Landmark—could create a unique architectural identity.

Taking into account the surrounding Loess Plateau terrain, we aimed to create an enjoyable visitor experience where guests can appreciate the scenery from varying heights and viewpoints. To achieve this, we designed a looping pathway resembling a ribbon that gently spirals along the slope. Visitors feel like they’re climbing, then descending, catching views of mountains and the lake intermittently, creating a progressive and dynamic journey.

The circular ribbon forms the building’s roof, naturally creating an enclosed square or district beneath it. Upon completing all functions, the entrance gate defines an edge, while landscaped areas welcoming visitors from all directions form nodes. This concrete ribbon-like structure becomes a new landmark, easily recognizable from any perspective.

Unfortunately, in 2020, the project was cancelled at the construction drawing stage due to funding shortages caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.
