The advancement and refinement of BIM technology depend heavily on a robust software ecosystem. Currently, several international software platforms support BIM technology, including Bentley, Autodesk, Nemetschek, and Dassault.

1. Bentley Platform. Bentley Systems, a U.S.-based technology company, specializes in infrastructure software development. Its BIM platform is built upon its own MicroStation software, which has been evolved into PowerCivil through 3D digitalization. This software is tailored for infrastructure design projects such as highways, railways, bridges, and tunnels. Models created with Bentley software can automatically generate sectional analyses and detailed element reports, offering high integration with modular highway design. The Chinese standard version supports horizontal, vertical, and alignment design directly, catering to Chinese users. Bentley’s product suite is comprehensive, allowing for secondary rendering and model development using other software within the same platform.
2. Autodesk Platform. Autodesk offers a range of specialized BIM software products for various industries, including Revit Architecture, Revit Structure, Revit MEP, and Civil 3D. Each application performs well within its respective field, and data can be exchanged seamlessly between programs on the Autodesk platform, facilitating the handling of complex models. However, Autodesk’s focus is primarily on the construction sector. Due to limitations in its underlying software architecture, it struggles with processing large-scale models effectively. For example, when modeling long-distance highways, users must segment the project into multiple parts to avoid significant performance issues.
3. Nemetschek. Graphisoft’s subsidiary, ArchiCAD, known for its strong reputation in 2D architectural design, has transitioned into BIM following its acquisition by Nemetschek. The software features a simple and intuitive interface that aligns with the workflows and thought processes of architectural designers. ArchiCAD holds a significant market share in architectural BIM, but its application is relatively limited in infrastructure sectors such as highways and railways.
4. Dassault. Dassault, a French company with a long-standing presence in mechanical design, especially in the automotive and aerospace industries, has expanded into the BIM field through its CATIA software. CATIA offers superior modeling, visualization, and information management capabilities. However, adapting its design approach from mechanical engineering to construction presents challenges. The software currently lacks adequate support for existing construction design standards and localization, which limits its integration and usability for construction professionals.
