BIM Q&A: What Is Core Modeling Software and How to Choose the Right BIM Tool

BIM relies on the collaboration of multiple related software programs. According to McGraw Hill Company, BIM is defined as the process of designing, operating, and managing projects using digital information models. Thus, any software that employs digital technology for modeling and information processing generally falls under the category of BIM software. Based on their functions, BIM software can be classified into two main categories: core BIM modeling software and BIM model-based analysis and application software. The latter category can be further divided into sustainable analysis software, electromechanical analysis software, structural analysis software, and others, depending on their specific application areas.

Choosing BIM Core Modeling Software

Core modeling software forms the foundation of BIM. The information models created with this software serve as the primary carriers for design work and are central to other BIM analysis and applications in construction projects. It is essential that professionals working in BIM first become proficient with these core tools. The most widely used BIM core modeling software internationally and domestically includes the following four main types:

1. Autodesk’s Revit series, which covers architecture, structural, and mechanical disciplines. Revit is known for its user-friendly interface, ease of use, and extensive third-party development libraries, contributing to its popularity in China.

2. Bentley’s Architecture, Structures, and Equipment series. This software is commonly employed in industries such as petroleum, chemical, power design, as well as infrastructure projects including roads, bridges, and municipal engineering.

3. Nemetschek’s ArchiCAD, AllPLAN, and VectorWorks products. ArchiCAD is also widely used in China, though its compatibility with multidisciplinary design institutes there is somewhat limited.

4. Dassault’s CATIA software, which is extensively used in aviation, aerospace, automotive industries, and holds strong advantages in engineering and construction fields.
