BIM standards and guidelines play a crucial role in shaping the development of BIM technology. The standards issued by government regulatory authorities have two major impacts on the adoption and growth of BIM within China’s construction industry:

First, these standards demonstrate the government’s support for BIM technology through its industry regulatory bodies. Second, they provide clear guidance on BIM applications for both companies and individual users. For instance, if a department specifies model deliverable standards in its BIM guidelines during a project, all participants using BIM can follow these standards throughout the execution phase.
BIM enterprise standards offer more detailed implementation plans tailored to specific organizational needs. These standards typically cover areas such as BIM software selection, BIM team organization, data exchange protocols, application scope, drawing standards, and final deliverables. Enterprises can develop their own BIM standards based on their unique requirements or project objectives.
During the creation of BIM standards and guidelines, the government often leads collaboration with industry associations, referencing international best practices while adapting them to China’s construction industry standards and unique characteristics. The initial focus is on core disciplines such as architecture, civil engineering, structural engineering, and equipment, before gradually expanding to areas including interior decoration, landscaping, and infrastructure.
Once established, these standards and guidelines are issued by regulatory authorities for use by enterprises and individuals as a basis for secondary development and application. Project owners can also create customized BIM standards tailored to specific project needs. To accelerate BIM adoption across China’s construction sector, both the government and enterprises must actively engage in developing and refining BIM standards and guidelines.
