BIM core modeling software can be categorized into four main groups:

First, Autodesk offers the Revit series, covering architecture, structure, and mechanical-electrical systems, which is primarily used in civil construction.
Second, Bentley provides software for architecture, structure, and equipment design, excelling especially in factory design and infrastructure projects.
Third, ArchiCAD, AIIPLAN, and VectorWorks are available but are less commonly used in China due to their limited application in architectural fields.
Fourth, Dassault’s CATIA stands out as a high-end mechanical design and manufacturing software, dominating markets such as aviation, aerospace, and automotive industries. When applied to engineering and construction, CATIA offers distinct advantages in modeling complex shapes and large-scale buildings, as well as superior presentation and information management capabilities compared to traditional construction software.
CATIA, a flagship product of Dassault Systèmes, enables users to design future products with advanced 3D technology and supports the entire lifecycle—from project conception, design, analysis, and simulation to assembly and maintenance. Its key advantages over other 3D design software include:
(1) Comprehensive functionality that allows the creation of any solid or complex surface shape;
(2) Parametric design capabilities, enabling the association and automatic updating of parameters and models.
At the core of the BIM workflow, Autodesk Navisworks plays a crucial role by optimizing design decision-making, construction execution, performance prediction, planning, and facility management. It facilitates the development of accurate 4D construction schedules and real-time project visualization.
Navisworks comes in several versions:
- Navisworks Freedom: Primarily an NWD file viewer;
- Navisworks Simulate: Accurately reproduces design intent, creates detailed 4D construction schedules, and enables advanced visualization of construction progress;
- Navisworks Manage: Combines precise clash detection and conflict management with dynamic 4D project progress simulation and photorealistic visualization. Key functions include file conversion, visual clash detection, walkthroughs, rendering, and animation simulation.
The animation simulation features include viewpoint and animation Timeliner, Animator, and Scripter, allowing users to select and save viewpoints, design animation routes, and adjust angular and linear velocities. Additional functionalities cover schedule import, model attachment, animation set addition, action design, and keyframe capture.
Considering the complex spatial positioning and construction challenges of bridge models, as well as the maturity of software used in China, CATIA was chosen to develop the BIM model for bridge engineering projects. The model was then imported into Navisworks Manage to create a dynamic, detailed construction simulation, which was further processed and analyzed to optimize construction plans.
Moreover, enhanced integration between BIM software and engineering project management was achieved through secondary development, enabling improved visualization and refined project management.
