BIM Q&A: Two Fundamental Approaches to Implementing Enterprise-Level BIM

The implementation of enterprise-level BIM involves specific strategies for planning, organizing, controlling, and managing BIM activities within construction companies. It serves as a crucial approach to digital transformation for architectural design firms. This process takes into account various factors such as production and operational requirements, existing challenges hindering business growth, the company’s technical pathways, as well as the current state of BIM adoption and personnel expertise.

BIM Q&A | What are the implementation methods for enterprise level BIM? Two basic forms of enterprise level BIM implementation

At the heart of this implementation approach is the development of a comprehensive BIM planning and standards system tailored for the enterprise. This includes establishing a scalable BIM framework and outlining practical, effective implementation strategies. By following these steps, businesses can carry out BIM deployment smoothly, efficiently, and cost-effectively. This ensures that the BIM solutions integrate seamlessly with the company’s organizational structure and strategic goals, providing robust technical and management support.

Currently, there are two primary approaches to enterprise-level BIM implementation.

1. Top-Down Approach: From Enterprise-Level Planning to Comprehensive Project Execution

This method begins by creating a strategic and organizational BIM plan for the entire enterprise. The plan’s validity is tested through pilot projects, which are used to refine and update the strategy continuously. Once optimized, the approach is rolled out across the organization. This process typically unfolds in three phases: initial preparation, mid-term launch, and full-scale adoption.

2. Bottom-Up Approach: From Project-Based Practice to Enterprise-Level Integration

Initially, BIM implementation focuses on meeting the demands of specific clients (Party A), with project operations centered around these needs. As experience accumulates through individual projects, the enterprise develops an overall BIM plan tailored to its unique growth requirements. This gradually expands to encompass enterprise-wide adoption.

For construction firms, BIM implementation is a complex, systematic initiative that benefits from combining both top-down and bottom-up strategies. In the early stages, it is advisable to engage a third-party professional service provider to assess the company and propose a comprehensive BIM implementation plan. This plan should cover fundamental policies, technical routes, key milestones, financial investment, and other critical components. Based on practical experience, enterprises should then develop and enforce BIM standards and guidelines, promoting their widespread use.
