Traditional 2D design relies on points, lines, and surfaces within fragmented design drawings. Any changes to these drawings require redrawing from scratch. In contrast, Building Information Modeling (BIM) enables the creation of 3D visualization models using specialized software. These models integrate various project components and accurately represent the geometric features of the entire curtain wall surface. When modifications are necessary, only the relevant properties need updating. Due to the high interconnectivity of BIM components, changes to one element automatically update related components, significantly enhancing efficiency and reducing human error.

According to the American Institute of Architects (AIA), BIM models improve in accuracy as a project progresses, achieving comprehensive information integrity and seamless data transfer at each stage. The Levels of Detail (LOD) range from LOD100 to LOD500, representing stages from conceptual design through preliminary design, construction documentation, material detailing, and final as-built drawings.
In the preliminary design phase for the curtain wall, Rhino software combined with the Grasshopper plugin was employed to build a conceptual model. Leveraging parametric technology, the outer skin of the curtain wall was refined by controlling the height of contours with varying curvatures. These contour lines were then arranged to create a grid layout. Parametric design enabled real-time adjustments of the curtain wall’s shape by modifying different constraints.
Rhino and Grasshopper generate parametric linear models that serve as conceptual designs without detailed curtain wall parameters. To add these specifics, the parametric linear model is imported into Revit for further development into a solid curtain wall model.
During the detailed solid modeling process, the Rhino model is imported into Revit to take advantage of Revit’s family system features. Curtain wall panels and components are modified according to system implementation numbers and definitions within the curtain wall system. BIM-generated curtain wall panels facilitate rapid production of design drawings through data processing, which can then be imported into Autodesk CAD for professional annotation. This workflow ensures compliance with planning and construction requirements.
