BIM enhances the industrialization aspects of the curtain wall industry, improving the quality and efficiency of detailed design and even the entire project lifecycle. This leads to significant cost savings for the construction sector and provides substantial benefits. The industrialization driven by BIM is an inevitable step for the development of the curtain wall industry. Therefore, the initial connection between the curtain wall sector and BIM is no coincidence. So, what aspects of space management are strengthened in complex curtain wall systems through BIM?
(1) The curtain wall transfers loads to the main structure via the edges of the civil engineering slab. BIM allows for precise verification of the sizes of structural edge beams and the positions of embedded curtain wall components, preventing clashes with the main structure during curtain wall installation.
(2) BIM effectively manages spatial relationships between curtain walls and interior finishes. For example, it ensures proper alignment between secondary partition walls and curtain wall frames, as well as the positioning of curtain wall operable panels relative to rooms.
(3) Coordination between curtain walls and mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems is critical. If the floodlighting system design is not finalized during construction drawing phases, its wiring and fixture layouts must be coordinated with the curtain wall during secondary detailed design. Additionally, rooftop M&E equipment is densely packed, requiring extensive coordination with the curtain wall discipline.
(4) Coordination between curtain walls and signage is another important aspect, including the integration of main building logos, lightbox advertisements, and curtain wall elements.
(5) Coordination between curtain walls and landscaping is also necessary, particularly concerning the interface between curtain walls and landscape flooring.
So, what space management improvements does BIM bring to complex curtain wall systems? As introduced by the editor, BIM directly drives transformation and development across various construction industry sectors. It overturns traditional approaches in the curtain wall industry and changes existing production processes. We anticipate new production methods and industry standards emerging as a result.
