BIM technology is a digital solution applied throughout the entire lifecycle of construction projects. It creates and consolidates all relevant project information into a universal data format that spans the project’s duration. This enables the development of a coordinated information model, serving as a shared resource and foundation for informed decision-making throughout the project. Rather than a single technology, BIM encompasses a suite of digital technologies, with its core being a computerized database of construction project entities and their attributes.

Looking at domestic BIM application cases, it is evident that BIM is primarily used in large-scale and complex projects. Expanding its use to more general projects would help accumulate valuable experience in BIM application across the construction industry. This approach would allow the industry to progress from simpler projects to more complex, specialized, and fully managed workflows.
In 2022, for China to successfully promote BIM adoption, the government must play a pivotal role. Government policy support can significantly accelerate BIM integration nationwide. From the perspectives of improving overall social production efficiency, reducing total social costs, and enhancing environmental protection, BIM technology represents the future direction of the construction industry.
Moreover, the growth of the BIM market depends on professionals who understand BIM concepts, methodologies, and practical techniques, and who can effectively demonstrate its benefits. As a symbol of advanced productivity, BIM must be fully integrated within the broader industry environment to achieve widespread acceptance and development.
Promoting BIM adoption is not about overturning existing industry practices but involves a gradual, bottom-up process of quantitative accumulation. Considering the overall development environment of the domestic construction sector, BIM implementation should be steadily advanced. This can be achieved through a collaborative approach led by government initiatives, supported by market promotion and public participation. By strengthening BIM awareness and lowering the barriers to its use and learning, China can foster the sustainable development of its construction industry.
