BIM Q&A: How to Optimize Construction Resources with BIM-Based Management

Materials are the most extensively used and consumed resources in construction, with cement, steel, and wood being the top three in terms of consumption and loss control challenges. By leveraging BIM technology, these resources can be managed and optimized effectively. Here’s how:

BIM Q&A | How can BIM optimize construction resources? BIM based construction resource optimization management

First, in concrete engineering, a detailed BIM model is created to represent the construction stages precisely. This allows for accurate planning and real-time control of concrete quantities at each stage, enabling timely communication with suppliers and preventing cost overruns caused by delayed resource allocation.

Second, for steel reinforcement work, BIM facilitates meticulous management across the three key phases: sampling, processing, and installation. The steel reinforcement model is automatically divided by construction sections and configured with reinforcing bars for precise quantity calculations. It simulates steel bar processing to monitor raw material consumption across different stages and components, allowing selection of processing plans that minimize raw material use, maximize utilization, and reduce waste. Detailed processing plans and labeled materials then guide the installation, effectively reducing steel waste and controlling costs throughout the process.

Next, using Guanglianda BIM template scaffold design software, the project is designed with a focus on formwork assembly and template system planning. During formwork design, parameters such as the upper probe value, lower span value, and extension measurements for both column and wall formworks are carefully refined. Formwork quantities are calculated based on construction sections, improving the accuracy of subsequent material estimates. In the template system design, the usage and turnover rates of reusable materials are calculated for each floor of the podium and main building, covering walls, beams, slabs, and columns.

This precise template construction planning ensures that various types of reusable materials are fully utilized, significantly reducing the overall cost of formwork construction.

BIM-based construction resource management enables exact calculations, precise planning, and minimized waste, offering innovative approaches for resource allocation and advancing the field of refined construction resource management.
