There are three main reasons for the current shortage of BIM talent within domestic construction companies:

1. BIM modeling engineers must have engineering knowledge, strong graphic interpretation skills, and proficiency with software tools. However, current BIM training in China remains inadequate. While schools, training centers, and software vendors offer courses, they fall short in delivering the skilled professionals that enterprises require. Consequently, companies must invest in robust internal training programs to bridge this gap.
2. BIM technology experts need advanced cross-disciplinary integration capabilities and experience with information technology. Unfortunately, it is challenging for individuals with relevant IT backgrounds to transition smoothly into the specialized BIM roles demanded by the industry.
3. Most BIM training today is conducted on-the-job, which often suffers from distractions and competing priorities. This leads many trainees to abandon the learning process before completion.
To address these challenges, construction companies can implement the following four strategies to cultivate technical BIM talent:
1. Cultivate BIM technology management professionals by ensuring they master the operational features of key BIM software. Although the industry uses various BIM programs, three main software types dominate the market. After mastering basic tools, learners can further explore information integration methods and specialized secondary development offered by software providers. At this stage, companies should distribute relevant learning materials and organize departmental training sessions.
2. Accelerate BIM talent development by emphasizing hands-on project management experience. Observing and participating in real construction processes enables learners to identify and solve BIM-related issues. However, practical project experience must be complemented with a solid understanding of on-site knowledge to fully apply BIM in project management.
3. Given the diversity of BIM specialties, individuals who have acquired foundational BIM skills should select a specific technical path to deepen their expertise. Designing BIM technology solutions at this level is complex and demands long-term commitment. High motivation is essential, and one-on-one mentoring or internal support systems can greatly enhance learning outcomes.
4. The final training phase involves developing the ability to apply BIM practically on construction sites. To validate training effectiveness, project departments must collaborate closely with BIM teams, integrating BIM management with real-world project challenges. This continuous feedback loop fosters the development of strong project management competencies within BIM teams.
By progressing through these four stages, companies can successfully nurture qualified BIM project management professionals. This team-based approach not only addresses project management challenges but also drives advanced BIM applications and transforms construction enterprises’ project management processes—marking a significant step forward in the industry’s evolution.
