BIM Q&A: An Overview of Popular 5D Construction Management Software

Building on the foundation of the 3D BIM solid model, 5D BIM integrates two additional dimensions: schedule and cost. In other words, 3D (model) + 1D (schedule) + 1D (cost) = 5D.

BIM Q&A | What are the BIM construction management software? Overview of commonly used BIM based 5D construction management software

When the 3D BIM model is linked internally with schedule and cost dimensions, and the construction process is dynamically visualized along the timeline, it creates a 5D construction simulation. This simulation allows for pre-construction analysis of site layout, construction phase segmentation, resource requirements, and more, based on the construction organization design documents. By optimizing the construction process, reducing change orders, and lowering costs, 5D BIM truly correlates planning, scheduling, and budgeting.

Such integration is facilitated by BIM-based 5D construction management software. Notable examples include iTWO from RIB in Germany, Vico software from Vico Software in the USA, and the Navisworks series from Autodesk, also based in the USA.

Commonly Used BIM-Based 5D Construction Management Software

1. iTWO by RIB
Developed by Germany’s RIB company, iTWO aims to bridge BIM modeling tools with ERP management software. It integrates BIM technology for quantity takeoff, pricing, and construction cost management. iTWO supports Revit and other modeling platforms, adheres to IFC standards, and is classified as BIM application software.

2. Vico Office Suite
Originally developed by Vico Software and later acquired by the US-based Trimble, Vico Office supports modeling tools such as Revit, ArchiCAD, MagiCAD, and Tekla. The suite includes modules for quantity takeoff, pricing, schedule management, and 5D construction process simulation. It features unique capabilities such as flow division and progress management via flow charts. Vico software complies with IFC standards and is categorized as BIM application software.

3. Navisworks
Autodesk’s Navisworks is widely used for construction simulation. It supports popular BIM modeling tools including Revit, Bentley, ArchiCAD, MagiCAD, and Tekla. Since the 2014 version, Navisworks has included 5D construction simulation features. Its broad compatibility and powerful capabilities make it a leading BIM application software.
