BIM (Building Information Modeling) has emerged as a significant trend in the construction industry due to its digital technology advantages, driving substantial changes across the sector.

According to the US BIM standard, BIM is defined in three main aspects:
1. BIM represents the digital modeling of physical and functional information for construction projects.
2. It facilitates resource sharing by enabling all involved parties to access building information. This provides reliable and effective data throughout the building’s entire lifecycle—from early construction stages to completion—helping decision-makers gain deeper insights.
3. BIM technology allows real-time addition, extraction, modification, and updating of project information, supporting collaboration among stakeholders at various project stages.
Typically, a BIM project team consists of about 15 members. Compared to traditional design teams, BIM teams are larger and have more specialized roles. In China, due to the relatively recent development of BIM technology, there is a shortage of professional BIM engineers, and highly qualified BIM project managers are even rarer.
As a result, most design institutes find it challenging to recruit over ten skilled BIM professionals at once. Instead, they often select a few existing employees for BIM training. However, this approach makes rapid progress difficult and limits the depth of BIM applications. Additionally, the training process is lengthy, and it remains uncertain whether the necessary BIM talent can be fully developed. High staff turnover also poses a risk of premature project setbacks.
Regarding salaries, BIM modelers typically earn around 50,000 yuan annually. BIM technical engineers make about 100,000 yuan per year. Due to high market demand, experienced BIM professional engineers can earn over 150,000 yuan annually. BIM project managers’ salaries vary depending on their company’s level, with some earning upwards of 300,000 yuan per year. Overall, BIM specialists tend to have higher salary levels compared to other professionals in design institutes.
