The most common role within a BIM team is undoubtedly that of the BIM engineer. Depending on their specialization, these engineers can be categorized as civil engineering BIM engineers, steel reinforcement BIM engineers, or installation BIM engineers. So, what exactly are the responsibilities of each?

1. Civil Engineering BIM Engineer
The primary responsibilities include reviewing and maintaining civil BIM models, providing guidance for on-site BIM applications, training on-site personnel, coordinating BIM efforts among all construction parties, and managing BIM systems and clients.
Job requirements: a strong work ethic and learning ability; 1–2 years of on-site construction experience; good communication skills; proficiency in basic CAD operations; familiarity with local quotas and calculation standards. Candidates with budgeting experience or construction technician backgrounds are preferred.
2. Steel Reinforcement BIM Engineer
This role focuses on maintaining steel reinforcement BIM models, reviewing and optimizing steel reinforcement cutting plans, guiding on-site steel reinforcement materials processing and binding, training on steel reinforcement BIM applications, and operating BIM systems and clients.
Job requirements: dedication and strong learning capacity; over 2 years of on-site steel reinforcement construction experience; effective communication skills; proficiency in steel bar leveling standards; familiarity with computer operations and common office software. Candidates with on-site steel bar work experience are preferred.
3. Installation BIM Engineer
Key tasks involve conducting clash detection between mechanical, electrical specialties, and structures; optimizing and adjusting mechanical and electrical pipelines; guiding mechanical and electrical construction sites; providing training on mechanical and electrical BIM applications; planning and approving mechanical and electrical materials; coordinating settlements; and organizing operation and maintenance data.
Job requirements: strong dedication and learning ability; over 2 years of on-site mechanical and electrical installation experience; good communication skills; mastery of mechanical and electrical standards; knowledge of at least two mechanical and electrical construction specialties; proficiency in basic CAD operations. Candidates who are technical engineers for on-site installation are preferred.
Besides BIM engineers, teams also need BIM project managers, BIM directors, and BIM coordinators. The number of roles assigned depends on the project size and requirements, so this overview serves as a general reference.
