BIM core modeling software primarily refers to tools used for creating 3D building information models. Various other BIM-related software—such as scheme design software, geometric modeling tools, structural analysis programs, mechanical and electrical analysis applications, visualization and model checking software, cost management solutions, operation management platforms, and publishing and review tools—are all developed based on these core BIM modeling systems.

Autodesk’s Revit series, influenced by AutoCAD, has become one of the most widely adopted core BIM modeling platforms in the construction industry. Using Revit, BIM modelers can develop building, mechanical, electrical, and structural models based on the design intentions of architects and engineers.
With Autodesk Revit Architecture, users can freely sketch and quickly create parameterized 3D models of various building elements such as floors, walls, roofs, stairs, doors, and windows. The Revit Structural modeling tools enable the creation of building structural components like columns and beams. The models produced are equipped with powerful design and analysis capabilities and can be exported to commonly used structural analysis software, ensuring consistency in the model’s data.
Revit’s MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) modeling tools allow professionals to build detailed 3D models for mechanical and electrical systems, including water supply, drainage, and fire protection. This enables early visualization of these systems, laying the groundwork for pipeline integration and collision detection, ultimately helping construction teams minimize clashes during the building process.
Bentley’s suite of architecture, structural, and electromechanical software is primarily tailored for industrial design projects, especially in sectors like petroleum, electricity, chemical processing, and pharmaceuticals. It is also widely used in infrastructure projects involving bridges, water conservancy, municipal engineering, and road construction, thanks to its unique strengths.
After Nemetschek acquired Graphisoft in 2007, ArchiCAD, VectorWorks, and AllPLAN all came under the same software vendor. Among these, ArchiCAD is particularly well-known among Chinese designers. Since its market debut, ArchiCAD introduced the concept of 3D virtual design and is recognized as one of the earliest BIM core modeling software worldwide. However, because ArchiCAD focuses solely on architectural design and does not support mechanical, electrical, or structural engineering modeling, its usage in China remains limited.
Dassault Systèmes’ CATIA software is mainly used in aerospace, automotive, medical equipment, shipbuilding, and other industries. Designers rely on CATIA’s extensive modeling tools and commands to create models with complex curvatures and shapes, meeting the stringent accuracy requirements these fields demand.
