BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a technological approach that can be utilized throughout the entire lifecycle of a building. In engineering projects, BIM enables information sharing, digital representation, and collaborative workflows, significantly enhancing construction efficiency while reducing risks. This represents a transformative revolution in the construction industry.
Key Features of BIM
1. Visualized 3D Model. Visualization is a core feature of BIM. It uses specialized software to create a three-dimensional model based on two-dimensional drawings, strictly following the attribute specifications of the engineering object. This visual model facilitates coordination, communication, and data exchange among all stakeholders at every project stage.
2. Parameterized Modeling. Parameterized modeling involves defining geometric parameters and constraints according to specific rules to build the model. The basic components are digital objects encompassing both physical and functional properties. These parameterized models communicate intelligently; for example, when designing beams and slabs, any overlaps are automatically detected and resolved. Moreover, when a parameter such as beam size is changed, all related components update automatically, significantly reducing modeling time.
3. Collaborative Work. BIM technology enables seamless cooperation across various disciplines. When a design change occurs in one area, BIM software notifies other participants, allowing them to update their respective designs based on the latest information, ensuring consistency and coordination.
4. Information Output. To ensure compatibility across different BIM software platforms, the internationally recognized IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) plugin is used to facilitate data exchange and sharing. However, for domestic computational models, the accuracy of IFC-based conversions can be limited. Instead, a domestic GFC plugin achieves high conversion accuracy, reaching up to 100% model conversion efficiency.
