BIM Q&A: Exploring the Use and Applications of BIM Technology in China

As building developers in China increasingly recognize the importance of modernizing Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology, many are actively integrating BIM into their construction projects. Experienced BIM practitioners are advocating for the gradual improvement of BIM usage guidelines to make applications more user-friendly and communication more efficient. They suggest designing specialized BIM software that not only aids design and research institutes in advancing new technologies but also helps various enterprises secure a competitive market position.

BIM Q&A | Where are BIM technologies being used in China? The Application of BIM Technology in China

Application of BIM Technology in Beijing

Take the Beijing Fortune Center as an example. This key construction project in Beijing, completed in 2009, is an office building located on the East Third Ring Road in Chaoyang District, facing the CCTV headquarters. Covering approximately 18,000 square meters and standing over 200 meters tall, it ranks as the second tallest building in Beijing.

The Beijing Fortune Center features a foundation made of bamboo raft blocks and a frame structure composed of steel bars and concrete. Its cylindrical design integrates multiple components to form a unified structure. The building’s complex systems include water supply and drainage (covering domestic water, reclaimed water, sewage, fire water supply, and sprinkler systems), electrical systems (including strong current, weak current, fire protection, and comprehensive wiring), and ventilation systems (such as air conditioning, positive pressure air supply, and smoke control and exhaust).

Due to the building’s complex internal design, intricate pre-visualized effects, and diverse functional requirements, construction posed significant challenges. BIM technology was essential for achieving precise predictions. By creating accurate 3D models enriched with specialized information, BIM enabled collaborative optimization and technical clarity among different disciplines, effectively addressing these challenges.

Application of BIM Technology in Shenzhen

The Shenzhen Ping An Financial Center, China’s tallest building, reaches a tower height of 660 meters, with a main structure height of 588 meters. It has 115 floors above ground and a total construction area of about 460,000 square meters. This large-scale electromechanical general contracting project encompasses more than 20 specialized subsystems, including fire protection, floodlighting, health monitoring, water supply and drainage, gas engineering, ventilation, and air conditioning.

With a total contract value of 1.283 billion yuan, this project marks the first large-scale electromechanical general contracting effort of its kind in China. Thanks to BIM technology, the construction team has successfully raised the main structure above 530 meters, ranking the building fifth among the world’s tallest skyscrapers. The comprehensive application of BIM has allowed timely completion of key milestones: installation and commissioning of air ducts and components on the 35th floor; water system activation up to the 50th floor; installation of horizontal main pipes for mechanical and electrical systems up to the 65th floor; and completion of main line installations for mechanical and electrical systems on 90 floors. These achievements have ensured steady construction progress while maintaining safety and quality standards.
