As a BIM professional, you likely use BIM software daily. But do you know which software is the most commonly used among BIM practitioners?

1. Revit. Developed by Autodesk, Revit is a parametric modeling software widely used in the BIM field. It primarily focuses on 3D modeling, enabling designers to visualize buildings in detail. Once the model is complete, Revit can directly export 2D drawings and material lists, ensuring the accuracy of all documentation. At its core, Revit features a parametric change engine that automatically synchronizes and updates information throughout the model. It is the most popular BIM software in China and is commonly applied in architectural design, structural engineering, and construction projects.
2. Rhino. Rhino, launched by the American company Robert McNeel in 1998, is a powerful advanced 3D modeling software. Traditionally used in 3D animation, industrial design, and mechanical engineering, Rhino excels at handling complex surface models and integrating various model formats. With the development of numerous plugins, Rhino has become increasingly popular in architectural design. The most common use is combining Rhino with the Grasshopper parametric modeling plugin, which allows designers to quickly create complex, irregular architectural shapes with high graphic precision and export files compatible with different software.
3. Grasshopper. Grasshopper is a visual parametric design tool built on the Rhino platform, ideal for designers without programming experience. It offers over 300 pre-built operation scripts packaged as arithmetic units that perform logical operations based on their relationships. Grasshopper provides real-time visual feedback within Rhino, facilitating design adjustments. Its main advantage is user-friendliness and visual operation, though its limited arithmetic units may impose some constraints.
4. Navisworks. Navisworks offers advanced tools for analysis, simulation, and project data exchange. Its standout feature is real-time visualization, allowing users to explore 3D model data interactively. This capability helps detect potential clashes within the model and generates detailed reports, enhancing project understanding and predictability. The real-time navigation and review tools significantly improve collaboration among project teams. Navisworks is compatible with most 3D design software and laser scanning formats, enabling integration of multiple software formats into a single virtual model. This integration supports detailed review of graphical elements, component information, and related databases, while facilitating quick creation of animations and views exportable as videos or images for effective collaboration.
5. Guanglian Da BIM5D. Guanglian Da BIM5D centers around the BIM platform, integrating all professional models as its foundation. It incorporates construction progress, quality, contracts, and cost data into the model, providing comprehensive project data support to form a 5D information model. This software simulates construction processes, collects key project data via mobile devices, and delivers precise information to technical, production, and other teams during construction. By improving work efficiency and enabling digital management of construction processes, Guanglian Da BIM5D helps clients save time, control costs, and enhance overall project management efficiency.
