BIM Q&A: How Quality Control Works and Solutions for Improving BIM Quality Management

Quality control using BIM technology offers clear advantages, yet its scope, stages of application, and specific implementation points remain limited. Currently, there are several challenges hindering the widespread adoption of BIM technology:

1. Changing the mindset of project managers and construction staff is difficult. Many still rely heavily on traditional two-dimensional drawings and their own experience rather than embracing BIM as an innovative technology, resisting shifts away from conventional thinking.

2. There is a shortage of professionals skilled in BIM technology. As BIM is relatively new in the construction sector and lacks a fully developed theoretical framework, training programs are not yet widespread, resulting in few experts proficient in its practical application.

3. The use of BIM models for quality control is currently limited. Most BIM models focus on 3D visualization during project preparation, collision detection, 3D construction sequencing during execution, and quality process control. However, BIM’s role in quality management during the later operation and maintenance phases remains underdeveloped.

Considering these challenges and drawing on successful BIM implementation experiences from leading construction companies in China, the following improvement strategies are recommended:

1. Shift the traditional mindset of project management staff. At the enterprise’s leadership level, increase awareness by developing BIM management systems and workflows, embedding BIM into the company’s strategic development. At the operational level, adopt a phased, lightweight approach to BIM adoption: first, allow managers to apply BIM in solving practical problems to experience its efficiency benefits and recognize its value. Subsequently, develop project-level BIM processes that involve different departments collaborating on a unified platform, fostering integrated BIM use throughout construction project management.

2. Enhance the BIM quality control management process. Address current issues by optimizing the BIM team’s organizational structure, responsibility allocation, and workflow within project departments. Additionally, refine the BIM quality control system by expanding its content and operational procedures, particularly focusing on quality management during the operation and maintenance stages. Develop a comprehensive BIM-based quality control guideline manual to support this process.

3. Develop BIM talent within organizations. Establish dedicated training programs for BIM skills, encouraging staff to participate in external learning opportunities, BIM training sessions, and industry exchanges. Creating a BIM studio led by technical experts and professionals can elevate expertise and drive BIM adoption across the company. Simultaneously, form BIM-focused teams within project departments to continuously explore and advance BIM applications, ensuring the technology effectively enhances construction project management and elevates the company’s refined management capabilities.
