BIM Q&A: How Does BIM Streamline Engineering Project Construction? Explore These Two Case Studies!

The Shanghai Laogang Renewable Energy Utilization Center project began in 2015 with a total investment of 1.47878 billion yuan. The facility covers a construction area of 49,805 square meters, processes approximately 1 million tons of waste annually, and generates over 300 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. As the largest domestic waste-to-energy plant in Asia, it features a centralized equipment layout with a complex spatial arrangement, challenging construction conditions, extensive piping, and high installation difficulty.

BIM Q&A | How does BIM guide engineering project construction? Take a look at these two cases!

Shanghai Urban Construction Engineering employed Autodesk and Guanglianda BIM software to develop distributed BIM models for HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and thermal engineering disciplines based on design drawings. This BIM visualization accurately represents equipment and pipeline layouts. The team integrated and checked for clashes sequentially within and across specialties, simulated system operations, manually reviewed, and produced construction documents.

By comparing the BIM model against design schemes, they optimized system debugging, identified precise equipment operating points, and refined system plans to promote green and energy-efficient solutions. The use of BIM during the design phase saved nine months of project time. Enhancing the model’s detail improved quality, reduced costs by millions of yuan, and achieved energy savings, emission reductions, and environmental benefits—fully realizing the value of the Laogang Renewable Energy Utilization Center.

The Yueman New City resettlement housing project in Kunming also began in 2015. It spans an area of 92,805.10 square meters, measuring approximately 307 meters east to west and 313 meters north to south, with a total construction area of about 560,000 square meters. As a government resettlement housing project with a tight schedule, it involved simultaneous construction of twelve towers, increasing the risk of conflicts and safety hazards.

Hunan Construction South Engineering Bureau utilized Revit and Navisworks BIM to build an electromechanical BIM model that verified pipe well layouts and net heights, optimized fireproof rolling shutters, and created a civil engineering model to summarize anchor rod acceptance tests, monitor anchor rod displacement, and control pile foundation and raft data.

Using parameterized 3D BIM models, they simulated tower crane positions, including arm length and height, conducting pre-emptive collision checks through single-factor analysis. BIM was also applied to evaluate construction plans concerning layout, temporary power, safety, work zones, and mechanical positioning, enabling optimal decision-making via comparison and simulation.

In combination with construction site planning, a comprehensive BIM site analysis addressed mechanical equipment layout, material transportation, and storage issues, resulting in significant cost savings. Specialized BIM software refined the demand forecasting for steel bars, formwork, and scaffolding, while engineering quantity budgets were implemented using an integrated database.

Through BIM application in the decision-making and design phases, a BIM management platform was established and endorsed by project management. The platform was smoothly integrated into operational workflows, featuring a feedback mechanism that provides accurate and timely data to future management personnel, facilitating efficient information sharing, feedback, and processing.
